… the bolt hit the statue in spite of a lightning rod located at the top of the dome some 30 or 40 ft. above the statue. The little lines you see all over the statue are mosquitoes. The Paraná River banks are just a few blocks from the shrine and there are swarms of millions of pesky mosquitoes feasting on the faithful.

Regarding the questions by many regarding this miraculous sign of the Divine Wrath, some have asked how many keys was Saint Peter holding prior to being struck. Mr. Caso-Rosendi says the locals confirm there were 2 keys.
To some that was important, but in the history of art of Saint Peter the number of keys depicted is not always 2.

I believe the correct spelling is “Caso-Rosendi”. Thank you Fra Bugnolo for publishing this interesting image. Some are already saying that the halo was removed some time ago. If that is disinformation I do not know but even if that is true, it is quite remarkable that the lightning hit the keys while the lightning rods above should have attracted the discharge first. May be someone among your readers who is knowledgeable in physics could help us understand that. The swarm of mosquitoes covering the statue … a reminder of the plagues of Egypt?
Lighting follows the least path of resistance. Striking above the structure during a storm with rain, it would have run the shortest path to the ground, skipping even over the air if possible. I was the eye witness to a near strike of lighting nearly 23 years ago, and saw a tree explode into a Hell like inferno just meters from my face. So I have no difficulty in accepting that certain items which are more flammable or conductive were vaporized as the bolt ran groundward.
