What is the position as regards Pope Gregory VII who was exiled and never resigned? Surely Canon Law was ignored then as it was seven years ago? Does this not mean that all ‘popes’ since haven’t been authentic?
Exile in his epitaph means only that he died outside of Rome. He died, so there was no question of a resignation.
